Transforming compliance to savings with ESOS

Our customer is a large entertainment complex facing a whopping energy bill of millions each year. They had two key requirements: to reduce energy demand, and meet compliance commitments under the Government’s Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS). With expertise to help with both, they chose Energise.

Our approach

We started by collecting and analysing data to establish those areas of the extensive site that were the most significant energy consumers and would benefit from further scrutiny.

Our consultants undertook site surveys to look at specific attractions to understand how the operation was run, including the equipment in use and its repair and maintenance, staff working practices and how visitors used the site. This gave us the chance to identify where energy and cost savings could be made – by investing in equipment upgrades and renewable energy sources, changing working practices, altering staff behaviour, and adjusting repair and maintenance programmes.

Some of our recommendations:

  • Replacing ageing equipment with more energy efficient or different equipment, including motors for rides and pumps, refrigeration for the ice rink, boilers, etc
  • Running energy-intensive attractions, only when they are above a particular threshold of capacity
  • Where to invest in renewables such as solar and wind
  • Shutting down areas of the restaurant in slow periods
  • Turning gas hobs off when not in use and other behavioural change pieces.

Energise’s Innovative Approaches

We modelled the “energy balance” of entire site to enable us to drill down into specific areas using different scenarios. For example, we looked at what would happen if heating was reduced by 2 degrees across the whole site, or what would happen when refrigerators were removed from heated rooms.

Our data collection also gave us information on the specific energy usage of individual rides and buildings, so we could advise the customer where the most significant use was and therefore where they could make the highest savings.

Our high level four Rs (Review, Reduce, Renew, Rebalance) approach meant we weren’t just looking at energy efficiency; we also gave the customer a staged route to Net Zero.

Benefits and Savings

  • Identified 4.6 million kWh of energy reduction opportunities, equivalent to £295,000 in cost savings (in 2021) with a payback of 1.4 years.
  • Investments in renewables would further reduce 272,000 kWh of grid consumption with a cost saving of £75,000
  • Suggested changes could provide cost savings of 18.5%.

Outcomes

With our support, the customer:

  • Met their ESOS Compliance, with a report submitted to the Environment Agency on time and in line with requirements
  • Identified major energy, efficiency, and cost savings
  • Received support with energy reporting, deep dive on energy hotspots and support for energy management.

Energise don’t just tick compliance boxes and do the bare minimum – our business ethos means we go further and dig deeper. For this customer, our ethos meant we surveyed more of the site than we needed to, analysed more data than we needed to, looked at catering franchises as well as the business’s own, and identified more savings in terms of energy and costs as a result.
