Inside JDR's Net Zero Strategy:
Goals, Actions, Impact

Strengthening Sustainability Through Collaboration

JDR Cable Systems is a leading provider of subsea power cables and offshore energy solutions. Their innovative cable technologies support the transition to renewable energy, including offshore wind and decarbonised oil and gas projects. With manufacturing sites across the UK, JDR is committed to reliability, technological advancement, and now, embedding sustainability into their core business strategy.

What JDR needed:

As part of their commitment to sustainability, JDR sought to build a Net Zero strategy with global climate objectives. Recognising that over 95% of their emissions originate from their supply chain, a core element of their ambitions was to enhance data collection, improve supplier collaboration, and integrate environmental considerations into procurement decisions. Their goal was clear: build a more resilient, transparent, and sustainable supply chain.

JDR understood that tackling sustainability challenges required expertise and a structured approach. They needed:

  • A clearer understanding of their carbon impact, particularly in Scope 3 emissions.
  • Stronger engagement with suppliers to drive sustainable procurement.
  • Strategic alignment with frameworks such as the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and disclosure platforms like CDP and EcoVadis.
  • A roadmap for integrating sustainability into their decision-making processes.

Elgan Hallett, Sustainability Manager at JDR, highlighted the challenge:
“Sustainable procurement is critical for our future. Our supply chain directly influences our carbon footprint, and we needed to develop a structured approach to engage and collaborate effectively.”

Our Process of Collaboration:

Energise partnered with JDR to develop a tailored sustainability strategy, supporting their efforts through:

  • Carbon literacy & workshops: We provided training to improve sustainability awareness across teams, ensuring a company-wide understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead.
  • Carbon footprint analysis: Together, we enhanced JDR’s ability to measure and report their emissions, improving the accuracy of Scope 3 data and supplier assessments.
  • Supply chain assessment: JDR’s top suppliers were evaluated against key sustainability criteria to support engagement and identify improvement opportunities. sustainability criteria to support with engagement and opportunity identification.
  • Lifecycle Assessments (LCA):  We introduced LCAs to help JDR evaluate the environmental impact of its products and inform decision-making.
  • Ongoing support & action planning: We supported JDR in setting SBTi-approved targets and improving sustainability disclosures. This support led to JDR achieving SBTi validation of near-term and Net Zero targets and resulting in in a year-on-year improvement in CDP and EcoVadis scores.

Elgan noted the impact of our collaboration,
“Partnering with Energise has been invaluable. Their expertise has helped us refine our approach, strengthen our supply chain, and make tangible progress towards sustainability.”

Outcomes and Benefits for JDR:

Their proactive approach to sustainability has led to significant progress:

  • Enhanced supplier collaboration: Stronger relationships, collaboration and transparency with key suppliers have laid the foundation for more sustainable material sourcing, particularly in metals and polymers.
  • Improved carbon footprint management: With improved data collection and reporting, JDR can now track and reduce emissions with more accuracy.
  • Regulatory compliance and risk reduction: Proactive approach to evolving sustainability standards.
  • Stronger market positioning: Their commitment to sustainability has strengthened their reputation with clients and investors, positioning them as a forward-thinking industry leader.
  • Recognition & compliance: Approval of SBTi targets and improved CDP and EcoVadis ratings demonstrate tangible progress and align JDR with international sustainability standards.

JDR continues to embed sustainability across all aspects of their business. As they refine their approach to responsible sourcing and deepen supplier engagement, they remain committed to driving meaningful change.

Their journey is proof that with the right strategy and collaboration, sustainability challenges can become competitive advantages. We are very proud of their dedicated progress, and to support them in making a lasting impact.
