Transforming CDP Scores – A Case Study

Introducing Bar & Restaurant Operator A – a popular bar and restaurant chain with multiple sites across the UK, offering a variety of food, drinks, and entertainment. Despite a complex portfolio, Restaurant A is consistently improving their commitment to sustainability and making impressive progress towards positive action.

What Restaurant A needed:

Restaurant A started their sustainability journey with Energise by initially looking at Energy Management before turning their attention to Net Zero and wider sustainability ambitions. At the request of their stakeholders, they had completed their disclosure through CDP, but only received an F score. With a desire to improve across the board and highlight their sustainability ambition to their investors, they called on Energise for support. The customer explained that transparency was essential for them; it was clear they didn’t want to greenwash. Restaurant A wanted to understand:

  • How to respond to the CDP questionnaire
  • What their CDP score would be, highlighting where action was needed through a gap analysis
  • How to demonstrate tangible progress to investors
  • How the wider package of sustainability decisions across the business could inform their CDP submission and, in turn, how CDP standards could enhance sustainability decision-making

Our Analytical Process:

To support, our CDP consultants were able to provide an indication of their initial score, whilst identifying areas of action and improved data collection. The evidence-based approach was helpful for the customer in shaping planned actions, not only for CDP, but  also for the purposes of enhancing their sustainability strategy. Energise supported Restaurant A with:

  • Indicative CDP scoring based on our understanding of the organisation
  • Understanding where improvements could be made
  • Organising workshops with relevant individuals to provide objective responses to their queries and help with information gathering
  • Beginning to build in an engagement process to engage managers across their portfolio of sites in sustainability initiatives
  • A scoring estimate and submission following recommended actions

Outcomes and Benefits for
Restaurant A:

Upon resubmission, Restaurant A moved from a score of F to a B, and further engagement yielded a later score of A- in 2024. Having taken a proactive approach to identify the need for support, and willingness to implement initiatives across teams, this fantastic improvement shows the determination of Restaurant A to move the needle on sustainability. The CDP process became a great news story both internally and externally, providing Restaurant A with the opportunity to communicate their action to their stakeholders and the sector press.

Once their CDP submission was complete, our consultants worked with Restaurant A to generate an action plan to incorporate some of their learnings from CDP into their wider sustainability strategy.

Our consultant teams are continuing to support Restaurant A in maintaining their A score for CDP, alongside providing support across a variety of services including Life Cycle Assessments, ESOS, Offsetting, and more.
