Whitbread are hospitality experts running some of the UK’s favourite brands of hotel and restaurant chains including Premier Inn, Brewers Fayre and Beefeater. Whitbread employ 38,000 people and have over 850 hotels across the UK and Germany.

What Whitbread needed:

Whitbread believes in the importance of social responsibility, highlighted in their own sustainability program ‘Force for Good’, designed to make a positive impact in the world. As well as having their own sustainability schemes, Whitbread was required to disclose through the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) due to being a premium-listed UK-registered company. Although a certain amount of minimum disclosure is mandatory, Whitbread was looking to align as closely as possible with best practice, including quantifying their risks and opportunities in financial terms, so they enlisted the help of our team at Energise.

Our Analytical Process:

Consultants from our Strategy & Disclosure Pod provided the latest knowledge and technical expertise to model and quantify Whitbread’s physical and transition climate risks. They analysed the impact and likelihood of identified risks and opportunities across different time horizons and in the context of different possible climate scenarios. Workshops were held to discuss key insights and strategic implications of the results.

Outcomes and Benefits for Whitbread:

The results have helped the organisation to understand the likely resilience of the business over the coming years. The exercise revealed several opportunities to improve data quality in the future and allow for more detailed and accurate analysis, with an aim to disclose refined numbers in the future. Going through the quantification process with our consultants helped to advance Whitbread’s understanding and awareness of climate-related risks and opportunities, enhance stakeholder engagement throughout the business, and clarify strategic priorities over the coming years.
