JDR Cable Systems is a leading provider of subsea power cables and offshore energy solutions, supporting the global transition to renewable energy.

With manufacturing sites across the UK, JDR is committed to reliability, technological advancement, and embedding sustainability into its core business strategy. As part of this commitment, JDR joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to set ambitious, science-aligned emissions reduction targets.

What JDR needed

To align with global climate objectives and stakeholder expectations, JDR needed to:

   ●  Develop a robust greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, with a particular focus on Scope 3             supply chain emissions (over 95% of total footprint).

   ●  Set near-term and net zero targets in line with SBTi criteria, ensuring targets were                   credible, measurable, and externally validated.

   ●  Integrate SBTi requirements into their broader sustainability and procurement                         strategies.

   ●  Demonstrate leadership in the offshore energy sector by achieving SBTi validation and         communicating progress transparently.

Energise's approach to the challenge

Energise partnered with JDR to deliver a comprehensive SBTi target validation project:

  • Carbon Footprint Analysis: Supported JDR in collecting, validating, and analysing GHG data across all operations, with a strong emphasis on improving Scope 3 data quality and supplier engagement.
  • SBTi Submission Support: Guided JDR through the SBTi target-setting process, including gap analysis, completion of the SBTi Target Submission Form, and alignment with SBTi’s latest criteria and sector guidance.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitated workshops and regular communications to ensure internal buy-in and readiness for SBTi validation, and provided ongoing support to address SBTi queries and feedback.
  • Strategic Integration: Helped JDR embed SBTi-aligned targets into their Net Zero Strategy, procurement processes, and supplier assessments, ensuring a holistic approach to decarbonisation.

The Impact

The collaboration delivered significant outcomes:

  • SBTi Validation: JDR achieved SBTi validation for both near-term and net zero targets, committing to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 54.6% and Scope 3 by 32.5% by 2033 from a 2022 base year, and to reach net zero across the value chain by 2050.
  • Supply Chain Transformation: Enhanced supplier engagement and data collection, enabling more accurate Scope 3 reporting and targeted reduction initiatives.
  • Sector Leadership: JDR’s validated targets and transparent reporting reinforced its position as a sustainability leader in the offshore energy sector, supporting improved CDP and EcoVadis scores.
  • Continuous Improvement: The project established a foundation for ongoing emissions reduction, with a clear roadmap for future Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and lifecycle assessments.

The Result

Energise’s partnership enabled JDR to move from compliance-driven reporting to a science-based, strategic approach to carbon management. The SBTi validation not only satisfied regulatory and stakeholder requirements but also empowered JDR to drive meaningful decarbonisation across its operations and supply chain.
