Our people are our biggest asset. We make sure we recruit those who share our values, have the ability to develop personally and the will to continue learning professionally.
Today we talk to our Principal Consultant, Kris Nicholls. He joined Energise back in 2013 as our Data Administrator and has worked his way up through the business.
Tell us about your role
My role primarily revolves around reporting. With a background in data both at Energise and in previous roles, I enjoy turning numbers into insight.
During the last 7 years, I have gradually shifted my focus towards the carbon side of operations, particularly around carbon compliance schemes (such as CRC and Greenhouse Gas Reporting). I help organisations calculate their carbon footprint and provide them with ongoing reporting of energy consumption.
Apart from reviewing their energy use on an ongoing basis and looking out for any issues that might occur, I also take notice of areas of waste. It is part of my role to highlight opportunities where they would be able to reduce their energy use (and by extension their carbon), so thus improve overall performance.
What drives you?
I am very passionate about the climate challenge we’re facing and it’s important to me to have a job with a positive impact. I like interrogating data which can present our clients with opportunities and presenting it in an accessible way. I want organisations to understand and reduce their carbon footprint as it is so important. My role is to engage with their staff and help them achieve this.
Overall interest in climate change has gained so much more traction recently compared to when I first started at Energise. A lot of the organisations we work with now have a very ambitious attitude and targets around carbon which has been great to see, so I believe that as an industry we’re moving in the right direction.
To me, the climate crisis feels like a ticking clock and time is running out for us to take the action we know is needed. Working at Energise helps me feel like I am doing my part to help, but also the hope that I can go even further!
What do you enjoy about working for Energise?
The best thing about it is definitely the team. Everyone is great to work with and fun to be around (even remotely in recent months)! We have a shared goal that we’re all working towards and it's obvious that everyone is passionate about it. We each have different opinions and insight and there is always a forum to discuss them.
I also like that I’m constantly able to learn something new within the industry and keep developing myself.
Who inspires you?
It may seem like a strange one, but I’d have to say my daughter Josie. She’s not even 1 year old yet, but I think about her and what the world will be like when she is my age in 2055 if we don’t take action. That makes me want to take more responsibility.
Now that she is here, it brings home the need to do everything we can now, before it is too late.
Tell us three facts about you?
1. I’ve flown a kite on Alcatraz and Mount Doom
2. I once went over a decade without getting a haircut
3. I once sang so loud at a Foo Fighters gig that I got the attention of the lead singer!
